This Contemporary Impressionist landscape by Belgian artist Francis Besson reflects his deep connection to nature and his unique artistic vision. Born in Dundee, Scotland, in 1943, Besson moved to Belgium as a child, where he first gained fame as an actor. His artistic journey later led him to embrace his passion for painting, inspired by the stunning landscapes of Provence. His family’s second home in Cotignac, in the heart of Provence, became a wellspring of inspiration, and in the early 2000s, he made it his permanent residence.
Now living and working in the picturesque village of Cotignac, Besson draws upon the natural beauty surrounding him. His work, often described as impressionistic with almost pointillist elements, captures the intensity of the light, the rugged rocks, and the dense forests of Provence. Through his use of Conté crayon on paper, Besson evokes the essence of the region, transforming its landscapes into dreamlike scenes full of colour, texture, and emotion.
This particular piece exemplifies Besson’s ability to immerse viewers in the enchanting serenity of Provence, combining technical mastery with a profound love for his surroundings. His intricate layering and vibrant yet harmonious colour palette bring the natural world to life, creating art that is both timeless and deeply evocative.
