MORE INFO:
This French mid-century Impressionist oil painting on canvas captures a lively view of Montparnasse in Paris by Robert Coutelas. Signed at the bottom right, it also bears a dedication and date on the back stretcher, indicating it was a gift from the artist in 1972. The piece is presented in an elegant gilt frame titled Montparnasse.
Vivid and full of energy, the painting portrays Parisian street life—people, cars, and the vibrant hustle and bustle of the city—set beneath a bright azure sky. Coutelas brings a dynamic, almost abstract perspective to his native Paris, reflecting scenes from everyday life in the 1960s. His impasto technique adds a palpable sense of vitality, while his masterful use of color infuses the work with sophistication.
Coutelas, now a highly regarded artist, has been the subject of numerous exhibitions, including a major retrospective at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Chartres in 2013.
